Eine Staffel (engl. Season) einer TV-Serie besteht meist aus 10-24 einzelnen Episoden, die dann oft durch eine lngere Drehpause getrennt sind. Die FBI Agenten Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) und Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) untersuchen unheimliche Flle, die meist mit UFOs, paranormalen Fhigkeiten, Geistern oder hnlichem zu tun haben. Die beiden ermitteln in den gesamten USA und decken hin und wieder kleinere (oder grere) Konspirationen und Geheimnisse auf. Neben vielen in sich abgeschlossenen Episoden wird alle paar Folgen die Hintergrundgeschichte erzhlt, die sich als roter Faden durch die Serie zieht. In Mulders Kindheit wurde seine Schwester entfhrt, und er ist berzeugt, dass die Kidnapper nicht von dieser Erde sind. Er wittert eine groe Verschwrung, in die scheinbar auch sein Vater und der geheimnisvolle Krebskandidat verwickelt sind. Die Serie lief ber ganze neun Staffeln, wobei Mulder und Scully gegen Ende von den beiden Agents John Doggett (Robert Patrick) und Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) abgelstwurden.
