I N H A L T Am 9. September 1971 bricht im Norden des Bundesstaates New York im Hochsicherheitsgefängnis von Attica ein Aufstand aus. Mehr als 1000 Gefangene übernehmen in kurzer Zeit die Kontrolle über das Gefängnis und nehmen 38 Wärter als Geiseln. In ihrem Kommuniqué heißt es: "Wir sind Menschen. Wir sind keine Bestien, und wir nehmen es nicht hin, wie solche geschlagen und mißhandelt zu werden." Der Forderungskatalog der Gefangenen umfasst u.a. Forderungen nach angemessener Lebensmittel- und medizinischer Versorgung, freier politischer Betätigung, Abschaffung der Zensur, den Rücktritt des Anstaltsleiters und Amnestie für die Aufständischen. Die Verhandlungen mit den Autoritäten blieben jedoch erfolglos und am 13. September beendet der Staat den Aufstand mit einem Massaker: Kampfhubschrauber werfen Tränengaskanister auf den besetzten Gefängnishof ab, 1500 Nationalgardisten, Soldaten und Polizisten stürmen das Gefängnis und deckten den Hof mit Feuer aus automatischen Waffen ein. 32 Häftlinge und neun als Geiseln genommene Wächter kommen um, 85 Menschen werden verwundet.
