In den 90er Jahren herrscht Bürgerkrieg in Sierra Leone. Fischer Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) wird mit anderen Männern aus seinem Dorf entführt und zur Maloche in Diamantminen gezwungen. Dort findet er einen seltenen rosa Rohdiamanten und versteckt ihn. Davon erfährt der weiße Söldner Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), als er wegen Schmuggels einsitzt. Kaum entlassen, bricht er mit der US-Journalistin Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) in die von Rebellen kontrollierten Unruheprovinzen auf. Er findet Solomon, der einwilligt, den Stein zu finden, um seine Familie zu retten...
